Mobile app: Uplifting a hospital task management app

This is a story about working through tech debt, design inconsistencies, and rebuilding trust and alignment with stakeholders...all in time to launch an app.

Sorry, this project is under NDA. I’d be happy to privately talk about the story behind this. :)

Overview

Problem

Medtasker was in the process of migrating hospital clients over from the old app to the new app. We had some key features to deliver before some major clients would agree to switch over. However, the migration was delayed by fragmented designs, tech debt, and a lack of stakeholder alignment.

How I helped

I first identified design inconsistencies that were causing tech debt, and conducted internal stakeholder interviews to consolidate design priorities. I facilitated a series of intensive design critiques to ensure stakeholder alignment. I then worked closely with developers to translate designs to build, and kickstarted usability testing for user feedback.

Impact

Clients have successfully been migrated over from old to new technology in time for launch. The new app is currently live in major hospitals across Australia and New Zealand. We also kicked off user-testing, laying the foundation for UX research for projects to come!

Recap of impact

Live and launched ! (on time)

Currently live in major hospitals around Australia and New Zealand.

100% of clients successfully migrated from old to new app

Delivering the final key feature meant that clients felt more comfortable transitioning over to the new app, and efforts towards depreciating the legacy app could finally begin.

Laid foundations for future usability testing

I was able to kick off usability testing in hospitals (extremely cool experience!) and watch doctors use it in person, which was incredibly eye opening. We got insightful feedback, and also built a user testing repository.

It wasn’t a smooth road…

Lack of internal stakeholder alignment

Poor communication previously between design and stakeholders meant that stakeholders often felt blindsided and lacking confidence in design decisions.

Tech debt

We had a mixture of design assets inherited from previous designers, no consistent visual style, and a Design System which wasn’t referenced - which confused engineers.

Siloed engineers

Engineers were more used to a siloed approach, where designs were just handed over without much discussion or engagement, contributing to confusion and technical debt.
